Across the country this month, Liberal Youth Scotland, the youth & student wing of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, has been braving the elements to be at the forefront of the Yes! to Fairer Votes campaign launch.
Yes! to Fairer Votes is the non-partisan umbrella organisation bringing together all individuals and groups who believe in a ‘Yes’ vote in this May’s referendum on the Alternative Vote.
In Edinburgh, LYS members from across central Scotland joined the Edinburgh Yes! group in marching along Princes Street, before delivering pro-AV letters to Bute House, the official residence of the First Minister, Alex Salmond MSP.
Meanwhile, in Aberdeen LYS and Aberdeen University Liberal Democrats demonstrated at the city’s Bonfire night, raising awareness of electoral reform to the thousands attending the celebrations.
Commenting, Liberal Youth Scotland President Kristian Chapman said:
“The Fairer Votes referendum is our chance to replace the unequal, discredited system of First Past the Post with an alternative that finally gives voters the chance to express their true preferences, without the charade of tactical voting, and ensures that MPs truly have the support of a majority of their constituents.
This referendum is our chance to change our politics for good. The expenses scandal and the disgrace of Phil Woolas in Oldham East and Saddleworth have proved once and for all that our system is broken. This is your chance to make a difference.
Liberal Youth Scotland consider this referendum of the utmost importance in the coming year, and are willing to work with anyone, whatever their political colour or creed, who shares our goal.
People often criticise politics, and say that it doesn’t affect them, or that politicians don’t listen – now we have a chance to make them listen, more than ever before.”
