The time has come again for Liberal Youth Scotland to elect its leaders. At the Scottish Liberal Democrats conference next weekend at the Perth Conference Hall, we will elect our new office bearers.
The following positions are up for election:
- President: Acts as head of Liberal Youth Scotland, and provides strategic direction to the organisation.
- Vice-President (Campaigns): The VP (Campaigns) is empowered to act on campaign-related issues, consulting the office-bearers and President where possible. They are also given general responsibility for overseeing those events and fund-raising the Executive Committee decide to hold.
- Vice-President (Communications): The VP (Comms) has responsibility for the membership rolls, as well as communication with members, the party, and the wider world.
- Secretary: Responsible for taking minutes at meetings, creating agendas, receiving apologies and making sure these are circulated appropriately.
- Treasurer: Responsible for LYS’ finances, and making sure expenses are distributed appropriately.
- Ordinary Executive Members: Five OEMs will be elected with no fixed portfolio, but will be expected to aid the other office bearers in their duties.
Any member of the Scottish Liberal Democrats under 27, or are 27-29 and have paid the requisite fee to the party, is eligible to stand and vote in these elections, unless you have served more two terms as President, in which case you may not stand for either President or either of the Vice-President positions.
To nominate yourself for one of these positions, please email our returning officer Councillor Robin Waterston at Cllr.Robin.Waterston@fife.gov.uk, stating your name, membership number and the position you wish to stand for, as well as a manifesto on one side of A4, which will be distributed to the electorate. This should be submitted in the form of a jpeg image file. Alternatively, if email is not available to you, send all the details to Robin at 128 North Street, St Andrews, KY16 9AF. The closing date for nominations is 5pm on Wednesday 3rd of March. All nominations, including those submitted by post, MUST be received by this date.
The voting for these elections will take place at the Scottish Liberal Democrats conference in Perth, from the 5th to the 7th of March. The voting will commence at 11am Friday the 5th, until 5pm the next day, Saturday the 6th. The result will be delivered by the returning officer at the end of our AGM. The AGM will be held at 5.30pm that evening, room TBA. To vote in these elections, you must be at the conference, as postal ballots will not be available. You can find details at http://www.scotlibdems.org.uk/pages/conference, or you can register at the door on the day.
The returning officer has ruled that campaigning may not take place until the opening of polls on the Friday. In addition, social media and the internet may not be used specifically to campaign during the elections, ie the creation of specific Facebook groups, Twitter accounts, websites or blogs. If you feel that any candidate is in contravention of these rules, please contact the returning officer to make a formal complaint.
This is the crucial time for us, and the party. I look forward to seeing you all at conference.
Best of luck to all of the candidates.
