Students, led by members of Liberal Youth Scotland, gathered at the Student Loans Company HQ in Glasgow today to protest against the incompetence of the SLC in failing to pay student loans to tens of thousands of students, leaving many of them struggling, with some dropping out or even being forced to work in STRIP CLUBS to survive (Here’s the story of one student stripping to pay for herself).
Liberal Youth Scotland Vice-President (Communications) Callum Leslie said today “It’s disgraceful that these well paid executives are receiving bonuses, when they are responsible for thousands of students being left with nothing. This is hugely affecting in particular those who are first in their family to attend University or are from low income families, precisely the kind of people the Government say they want to encourage to go to University. This £2m could be far better spend by giving the money to hard up students, who need the money to feed themselves and pay rent, not on rewarding incompetence.”
The Student Loans Company has made headlines this year by failing to pay out huge amounts in loans and grants on time. This has left students with no money to survive on for months at a time. Freedom of information requests have now shown that they have paid out £2 million in bonuses to the top executives who presided over the disaster. This situation is unacceptable and we call for Ralph Seymour-Jackson, Chief Executive of the SLC and Michael Hipkins, Director of Student Finance strategy for the government to resign over this fiasco.
