Young Lib Dems Back Same-Sex Marriage

Liberal Youth Scotland, at their Annual General Meeting in Stirling, unanimously backed a motion to support the Equal Marriage campaign’s fight to allow same-sex marriage in Scotland.

Ruaraidh Dobson, the newly elected President of LYS, commented:

“The current situation of ‘separate but equal’ is unjust, illiberal and plain wrong.

“Any loving relationship deserves the full recognition of the state, and all the rights which go along with it.

“As Liberals, we think that everyone deserves the same fair treatment regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation.”

The Equal Marriage campaign’s proposals would allow same-sex marriage by amending the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1974, and permit mixed-sex civil partnerships by amending the Civil Partnerships Act 2004. They would also allow religious and secular celebrants to legally solemnise same-sex marriage, without placing any legal requirement on religious bodies to do so.

These changes are devolved matters within the power of the Scottish Parliament.
